Check out the first Total War: WARHAMMER III gameplay reveal, coming to Linux late in 2021

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Thursday, 13 May, 2021 - 18:23 · 1 minute

Today we've seen the first official gameplay of the upcoming Total War: WARHAMMER III from Creative Assembly, SEGA and porting studio Feral Interactive.

Before it gets into the gameplay though, it also shows off the Trial By Fire trailer that was released by itself yesterday which gets you in the mood for some action. This is the final game in the Total War Warhammer trilogy, and it's pleasing to see that we will have all three officially on Linux.

    Have a look below:

Some much bigger sites than us (Hi Eurogamer , IGN and so on) also got a hands-on preview. Sounds like all the previews were played across Parsec , which is pretty intriguing to see streaming tech used more like this.

"I think what I could say is that this is the final in a series of games, a trilogy, and this one is bigger, badder, better than the rest. We’ve had time to look over Warhammer 1, 2 and the DLCs. We've taken fan feedback and we’ve really improved on this game in terms of functionality and usability", says designer James Martin.

You can pre-purchase on Steam . The release will be sometime late this year.

Total War: WARHAMMER III announced and confirmed for Linux by Feral Interactive

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Wednesday, 3 February, 2021 - 15:17 · 1 minute

Total War: WARHAMMER III has just been formally announced by SEGA / Creative Assembly and the good news is that porter Feral Interactive have right away confirmed it's being supported on Linux (and macOS).

"The cataclysmic conclusion to the Total War: WARHAMMER trilogy is coming. Rally your forces and step into the Realm of Chaos, a dimension of mind-bending horror where the very fate of the world will be decided. Will you conquer your Daemons… or command them?"

For the Linux release date, usually it's a little while later but in this case it seems Feral may have been pulled in earlier than usual as Creative Assembly noted it will be available "as close to launch day as possible" with the exact date to be confirmed closer to launch which will be this year 2021. They also confirmed that it will be on the Epic Store but this time (like TROY did) it's not going to be exclusive at all.

Once we get more confirmed features and info we will let you know.

You can wishlist / follow on Steam . You can pre-purchase which gives an additional free Race Pack that more details will be given on "soon".

Mad Max and Shadow of Mordor delisted for Linux and macOS on Steam

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Monday, 4 January, 2021 - 11:57 · 1 minute

It seems Feral Interactive have a few less ports available to buy supported for Linux and macOS to start off 2021 with as both Mad Max and Shadow of Mordor have been delisted for both platforms.

The change happened just before the end of 2020 on both titles, as seen on SteamDB ( #1 - #2 ). On the macOS side, they lost more as a few Lego titles also vanished from mentioning macOS. Why? They all have a common publisher - Warner. Confirming this to me on Twitter , Feral Interactive stated "Hi, these games have been removed from sale on macOS/Linux due to their licenses expiring.".

So what does this actually mean? The Linux ports still exist, still work as expected and anyone who buys them on Steam would still get them too as they're attached to standard purchases. Going forward though, they're not being advertised or supported.

A shame but actually somewhat common. We see this with racing games, football games, sometimes music causes issues and more where licenses are often for a specific time period. In this case it's a bit more unique that it only affected the external ports.

Total War: THREE KINGDOMS - The Furious Wild is now available on Linux

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Thursday, 15 October, 2020 - 15:23 · 1 minute

After launching for Windows on September 3, porter Feral Interactive has now hooked up Total War: THREE KINGDOMS - The Furious Wild for Linux (and macOS) today.

This is the first proper extension to the map in THREE KINGDOMS, letting you visit the jungles around Southern China and with it, the fearsome tribes of the Nanman. On top of the map expansion you get 4 new playable factions each with their own mechanics with a total of 19 new factions included. There's also over 25 new units, new character artwork, a Nanman-specific tech tree and more. You're also able to play it in the 190 and 194 start dates.

On top of the expansion release, the Linux port is now also actually up to date too with the 1.6.1 update from the Windows version which we've been missing since the end of August. The 1.6 / 1.6.1 update was massive by itself as well so it's great to see that sorted out for Linux too. The highlights of that include:

    • The introduction of Shie Xie as a playable character (free DLC )
    • A front-end rework, which makes the main menu flow easier to get into a game
    • A rework of the entire campaign map which adds in: Gate Pass Battles, new commanderies in the south-west, additional new commanderies across the map and all regions have been given unique names
    • Balance changes across all characters and to battles
    • New unit type with Juggernauts, a very short-ranged artillery that are very deadly to enemies at close range
    • Tons of bug fixes

The Linux version patch notes from Feral are as follows:

    • Adds support for the following DLC: The Furious Wild
    • Incorporates all changes up to Creative Assembly's 1.6.1 update
    • Adds support for the following free content: Shi Xie
    • Makes a number of additional improvements and minor bug fixes

Available from Humble Store , Steam or you can buy it direct from the porter Feral Interactive on their store .

Looks like Total War Saga: TROY is still coming to Linux in 2021

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Monday, 12 October, 2020 - 11:09 · 1 minute

While currently Total War Saga: TROY is exclusive to the Epic Games Store, it appears Feral Interactive are still planning to bring official Linux support with a port onto Steam in 2021.

A Linux port was planned, and was actually confirmed when the game was originally announced back in early 2019. It later went exclusive to the Epic Games Store, which of course messed things up for Linux because Epic Games still won't support Linux with their store. Still, it will release on Steam in 2021, because that's when the exclusive period will be over.

What caught our eye was that Feral Interactive ported it to macOS and put that live on the Epic Games Store, and when this happened any mention of a Linux version was removed from Feral's famous upcoming port radar and this caused concern with readers emailing in about it - thinking it was cancelled for Linux.

Thankfully, that seems to not be the case. We emailed Feral Interactive who confirmed today that was a "technical glitch" and the Linux version of Total War Saga: TROY now appears again on their upcoming port radar list.

Feral mentioned they will make an announcement as soon as they have news on the game for Linux, which is the expected response, as of course they can't give out any more details until Creative Assembly / SEGA themselves do about the Steam release date.

You can wishlist / follow Total War Saga: TROY on Steam .

Total War: THREE KINGDOMS - The Furious Wild announced, on Linux 'shortly' after Windows

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Tuesday, 18 August, 2020 - 17:27 · 1 minute

Creative Assembly today announced Total War: THREE KINGDOMS - The Furious Wild, a full expansion coming to the hit strategy game and there's a lot of content.

This is not some minor DLC adding some new faces, it's coming with the first extension of the THREE KINGDOMS map that will see you visit the jungles around Southern China. This is where you will experience a bit of Nanman culture, which Creative Assembly mentioned as being a highly requested addition. More to explore and conquer sounds fun but even more so is what else is coming:

    • Four new playable factions, each with their own unique mechanics, and 19 new factions overall populating southern China
    • Over 25 new units including exciting and formidable animal units
    • Ferocious new character artwork
    • A new Nanman-specific tech tree with keystone technologies that require missions to be completed
    • A completely new character progression style that uses feats to unlock traits
    • Unique missions and narrative events designed specifically for the Nanman culture
    • One goal: to unite the tribes – but how will you achieve it? Through diplomacy or conquest?
    • Playable in both 190 CE and 194 CE start dates

    Check out the trailer:

In their official FAQ , as expected it's noted the DLC will arrive on Linux (and macOS) "shortly after" the Windows version which goes live on September 3. This is due to these versions being an external port by Feral Interactive. The wait can be anything from a day or two up to a few weeks in some cases.

Additionally, more free content will release at the same time for everyone in the form of a Shi Xie DLC.

You can pre-order on Humble Store and Steam .
