Resident Evil Village gets better on Linux with the latest Proton Experimental

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Thursday, 13 May, 2021 - 08:30 · 1 minute

Valve and CodeWeavers have once again updated Proton Experimental, bringing with it a needed fix for Resident Evil Village running on Linux.

It was only a few days ago Proton Experimental was updated to get RE Village working but it came with one big drawback. Previously you couldn't change any graphics settings in-game but as of the latest May 12 build, this has now been solved with Proton Experimental. So that marks another AAA Windows-supported game working nicely on Linux thanks to the Proton compatibility layer - such fast paced improvements!

Proton Experimental begins work to allow Resident Evil Village to run on Linux

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Saturday, 8 May, 2021 - 16:28 · 1 minute

Excited to play Resident Evil Village? It may not support Linux but that isn't stopping Valve with a new Proton Experimental update out now.

The latest update to Proton Experimental 07/05/2021 has a single line added in the changelog which notes "Beginnings of Resident Evil Village support.". With that in mind then, Valve's partner CodeWeavers and their Wine hackers are already hooking up whatever they can to get it working.

From initial few reports , it looks like you can actually get in-game now thanks to Proton Experimental but there are plenty of issues like settings not being able to change and videos not yet showing up. So keep that in mind if you were planning to pick it up to play it on Linux.

Like a number of other big titles, it probably won't be too long before it becomes much more playable given the progress on the Proton compatibility layer.

If you're not clear on what Proton and Steam Play are, be sure to check out our constantly updated dedicated page . It's a special compatibility layer for running Windows games and apps from Steam on Linux.

EXsynchronos is a wild and completely bizarre free transhumanism cyberspace metahorror

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Friday, 7 May, 2021 - 09:06 · 1 minute

Free Game Friday! Fancy trying out something completely bizarre? EXsynchronos from developer Ravee is a true cyberspace adventure and it looks fantastic visually.

The developer describes it as a "transhumanist action packed cyberspace metahorror" and frankly that's about as good a description as you're going to get on this one. It's a complete visual overload on the senses with puzzles, exploration, platforming and shooter elements, all wrapped in a dense atmosphere. You control a Pr0x (Process Resurrective gh0st eXistence), "one of the most advanced virtual technologies that was ever developed" possessed by a human soul.

    Prepare for lots of flashiness:

There's a huge and completely wild story behind it too. In fact, it's actually part of a series with this being the third (although you don't need to have played the others). Feel free to check out meloveyou and awaren3ss as the first and second episodes if you want the entire story but it's all quite disconnected.

When you download EXsynchronos, you get an 18 page PDF full of lore and words from the developer at the end, it's truly something to read through.

Play free on itch.io . You can donate if you like it when downloading.

David Szymanski and New Blood have updated DUSK to include some helpful UI updates, along with 40% off and there's plenty more to come for this brutal retro FPS.

For the main menu UI you can now delete saved games (hooray!), and there's a Continue button now to jump right back in a little easier for your current run. There's also a Max Loadout button for when you just want to bring on all the toys a little easier without lots of clicking.

Much more exciting stuff is coming though, as they're bringing over some fancy upgrades done for consoles including a completely redone world map and loadout menu to be "easier to read and navigate with a controller, keyboard, mouse and eyes.". We're also getting the weapon wheel, the classic HUD option and finally Steam Workshop support is getting close. You will be able to easily add in new "enemies, weapons and literally everything else". They mentioned how they've "basically rebuilt the entire game to be 100% moddable at this point".

Horror themed adventure Almost My Floor: Prologue adds a Linux version

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Tuesday, 15 December, 2020 - 12:03 · 1 minute

Almost My Floor: Prologue is the short demo of a much bigger upcoming point and click adventure, with a horror theme along with a sprinkle of comedy it does look good. Released back in October, the developer Potata Company released a Linux build just recently on December 2.

It has some pretty great artwork, and from what I played the touch of comedy was nice. Not particularly long at around 40 or so minutes but a fun glimpse of what's to come from the full game. Almost My Floor is a story about trying to get home, in an apartment complex that seems to have blurred the lines between reality and fantasy with a maze of floors and stairways along with horrible creatures that want you for lunch.

    Check out the trailer:

With a comic-book art style there's a lot to appreciate here. While the dialogue might be a little on the rough side (and some bits were still in Russian) there's still a certain odd and unique charm to it.

Really though it's the art and setting that sell it, with the classic point and click style and some puzzles to solve it's certainly very promising. The whole point of a Prologue is to get people interested in the full game, as it's basically a rough demo and interested I am.

Find Almost My Floor: Prologue on Steam now . You can also follow the full game here that's due to release in 2021.

Amnesia: Rebirth 1.1 is out, along with major rendering fixes for Linux

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Friday, 30 October, 2020 - 16:28 · 1 minute

Frictional Games have released Amnesia: Rebirth 1.1 which is a very important upgrade for Linux fans as it fixes up some major problems.

At the release, sadly the game was something of a mess for Linux with floating objects and at times everything vanishing. Thankfully, it seems the Linux graphical issues have been fully solved and you should now be able to play through. Nicely timed here by Frictional for Halloween.

    Here's the 1.1 release highlights:

    • You can now skip memories by holding down the left mouse button, or right trigger on a gamepad.
    • Linux graphics glitch fixed.
    • Various blockers fixed.
    • Various bug fixes.

    20226074681604075302gol1.jpg

It's not quite perfected though, and their next update will be focusing on more Linux fixes like full-screen issues on some desktops and the game acting oddly when you go to quit. On top of that full mod support is coming as they're "almost there" but it needs more testing.

We've livestreamed the first part on our Twitch Channel , and if you missed it you can find the first full episode on our YouTube Channel . Obvious spoilers if you click the link. Episode 2 of our play-through will go live on Twitch on Saturday October 31.

From what we've played so far, it's pretty incredible. A seriously intense atmosphere, that like previous Frictional horrors relies a lot on your immersion and psychological horror rather than constant jump scares. Amnesia: Rebirth likes to play with your mind. There's some impressive jump scares too though.

You can buy Amnesia: Rebirth from GOG and Steam .

Frictional are ready and waiting to scare us silly with Amnesia: Rebirth releasing soon, and they have a brand new trailer to get us in the mood.

"In Amnesia: Rebirth, you are Tasi Trianon, waking up deep in the desert of Algeria. Days have passed. Where have you been? What did you do? Where are the others? Retrace your journey, pull together the fragments of your shattered past; it is your only chance to survive the pitiless horror that threatens to devour you."

In the new trailer (below) you listen to Salim, one of the surviving crew members of the plane Cassandra, which suffered some sort of breakdown and crashed in the Algerian Desert. This new trailer gives is a brief but very interesting peek into some of the environments to be found throughout Amnesia: Rebirth.
