Grand Theft Auto VI trailer confirms arrives early with a crime-crazy Florida

Grand Theft Auto VI , like its protagonist Lucia, keeps finding itself in an awkward spot because of "Bad luck, I guess."

The trailer for Rockstar Games heavily, mightily, impossibly anticipated sequel in its record-breaking series landed on YouTube Monday evening , earlier than its previously published Tuesday morning release. That's because a pop-up, quickly suspended X (formerly Twitter) account posted it early, and Rockstar rushed to get its official version out, ending with a "Coming 2025" notice.

    Grand Theft Auto VI trailer.

It's a mishap far smaller in scale than most leaks, but it's notable for Rockstar, which typically lets out very little about its games beyond official trailers. GTA VI had nearly an hour of early gameplay and testing footage leak out in early September 2022, following a network intrusion. A teenager in the UK was arrested on charges related to the leak quickly after Rockstar confirmed its veracity. TikTok videos have also recently surfaced, with computer monitors showing off images of the game's setting, according to The Verge .

Far Cry 6 hands-on preview: Enough issues to make us say “ay, Dios mío”

      Sam Machkovech · news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Tuesday, 31 August, 2021 - 16:00

The trailer for Far Cry 6 featuring a very familiar voice for modern TV fans.

Roughly six weeks before Far Cry 6 's upcoming launch on PC and consoles, Ubisoft elected to unlock the entirety of this first-person shooter's opening beats for a press-only, hands-on demo. This kind of access differs from the carefully selected "slices" we sometimes play in preview events, as those are meant to show an unfinished game in its best light.

But after going hands-on with Far Cry 6 for nearly four hours, I was reminded why game studios are sometimes cagey about prerelease reveals.

The demo I played was equal parts massive and unwieldy. I couldn't help but feel like hundreds of Ubisoft staffers' efforts to create a beautiful and convincing pseudo-Cuban adventure wound up squeezed into a single, tiny clown car of a package. The issues didn't end with game-breaking bugs and wonky AI, which may very well be resolved on, erm, October 7. At this point, I'm more concerned about uninspiring new loadout systems, a narrative tone that can't make up its mind, and an absolute yawn of a return to the Ubisoft open-world bloat of old.

Mojang talk about new Minecraft mobs in the Caves & Cliffs update in a fresh dev video

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Monday, 17 May, 2021 - 10:13

Excited for the huge Caves & Cliffs upgrade coming to Minecraft? Even though it's being split in half , we certainly are and you can get a little more behind the scenes info in a new video.

Caves are one of the most unloved areas in Minecraft, so to see Mojang put some effort into sprucing them up a bit is quite exciting. Digging deep for riches should be much more enticing than it currently is and there's a lot of new goodies coming. What about the mobs though? There's plenty of new there too.

Interested in knowing more? Watch the below video:

Terraria has officially turned 10 years old with a small celebration update

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Monday, 17 May, 2021 - 09:07 · 1 minute

Terraria, the 2D pixel-art sandbox survival adventure has now officially turned 10 years old and it's going as strong as ever. Seriously impressive from developer Re-Logic!

I remember seeing it on PC for the first time almost 10 years ago while a friend was playing it, thinking it looked interesting and never thought it would go on to be as popular as it is. Frankly, I sort-of dismissed it entirely back then and went back to Minecraft. I was seriously wrong about it because it's an incredible game that deserves to be played.

Anyway, a fresh update went out to mark the occasion. Re-Logic mentions that "this update may not contain any new content (we were serious when we said 1.4.2 was it ;) ) - it does contain a very special celebratory world seed that is unlike any other that we have made previously". The wink face being an obvious nod to this really not being the end of Terraria.

    Here's what's new in Terraria 1.4.2.3:

    • Added Celebratory Seed
    • Corrected the damage on Frost Armor's set bonus debuff from 20 to 25 DPS.
    • Fixed Vulkan and Metal rendering issues that lead to crash, on FNA builds.
    • Fixed a certain exploit.
    • Fixed missing tooltip in Queen Slime's treasure bag.
    • Fixed every vine type except Normal/Flower vines from passing on paint as they grow longer.
    • Fixed King Slime's spiked minions being able to pick up money and despawn with it, similar to Queen Slime's minions previously.

    The celebration world seeds are:

Across both GOG and Steam it's currently 50% off for about 8 hours, so the sale ends around 4PM UTC. Be quick if you wish to get it with such a nice discount although it's not the highest it's been discounted but still a fantastic game to get so cheap right now.

You can buy it on GOG , Steam and Humble Store .

Hobo: Tough Life is an urban co-op survival game where you're on the streets

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Wednesday, 12 May, 2021 - 12:11 · 1 minute

Games about being homeless aren't new but they're still quite surprising when actually done well, and Hobo: Tough Life actually seems like a reasonably good experience. Note : key provided by the developer.

"Welcome to Praslav, a cold Central European city that grows even colder with the coming winter. Praslav is recovering from the political turmoil that followed the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Communist regime, which held the country in its iron grip for decades.

While most people eagerly awaited the coming of democracy and capitalism, some were unable to adapt to the new socio-economic climate. Soon they found themselves on the streets with nowhere to go.

You are one of those people."

    youtube video thumbnail

A setting that's not particularly nice to explore but that's part of the point. For a lot of people, this is their actual life every day. Playing it for fun though feels a bit weird but video games have gone to much worse places. As rough a setting as it is, the game though is somewhat enthralling - partly because I've never experienced what these people go through, although I see it all the time even around my own area.

It seemingly has it all. A full skill system to level up, a big open world to explore, a lock picking mini-game to steal goods which drops your morale, use scratch-cards to try and win some change. Your mission is to survive, and build up your own shelter piece by piece. Your not some hero though, there's no special powers here, everything needs to be done with thought and consideration for your basic survival.

Seems it's hit a small fanbase on Steam with the most recent user reviews giving it a "Very Positive" rating.

The Linux version seems to run reasonable well, with it running mostly smoothly on Max settings but it does stutter here and there when entering new areas as it loads bits in. Overall though, perfectly playable. You can play it solo or online in co-op with friends.

You can buy Hobo: Tough Life on Steam .

Valheim managed to sell over 1 million copies in the first week

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Friday, 12 February, 2021 - 14:40 · 1 minute

It was clear from the moment it release that Iron Gate was onto something with Valheim, their Norse mythology and Vikings inspired open world co-op survival game.

For an Early Access game on Steam from a new developer to hit over 1 million sales in the first week, that's pretty damn incredible considering the competition they are up against. By the second day of release they were already hitting close to 20 thousand players online, by the fourth day it was hitting close to 100 thousand online and they've since hit a peak player count of 219,465 on Thursday, February 11.

We did reach out to the developer to see how the Linux sales went so far but no reply yet. They're only a small team and due to the popularity, they've probably got thousands of emails waiting so it's not really surprising. A lot of it was developed on Linux too, so that's awesome.

They've got a lot planned to come to the game through 2021 and perhaps even beyond considering how popular it is, they should now have plenty of funding to ensure it sees a long life. It's already got a huge amount to see and do though, it's definitely going to stay as one of 2021's best Linux games.

You can buy Valheim with Linux support on Steam . It's an easy recommendation.

Just as a reminder: if you want to hook up with other Linux players, our Discord has a Game Server channel with multiple people hosting already and plenty of regulars from our community joining in on the fun.

Steampunk survival game Volcanoids has a huge combat upgrade

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Tuesday, 19 January, 2021 - 22:19 · 1 minute

Stuck on an island where the volcano is erupting constantly, Volcanoids is an interesting setting for a survival game that gives you a big moving drill for a base.

After sticking in co-op to the Early Access game a while back, the team at Volcanoid (yes the team is named like the game), have now boosted the combat in the game to make it actually a lot more interesting. To say this is a huge update would be quite the understatement. They added in aiming down sights, weapon recoil, bullet drop and spread, hit indicators, actual projectiles (no hit scans), lots of new animations, new guns and…you get the idea.

Check out the new trailer to show it off:

    youtube video thumbnail
    Watch video on YouTube.com

Enemies got more interesting too and they no longer aimbot, they have to try and hit you now. Enemy COG robot units also now come in many more flavours and designs for each class and tier, plus they learned some new tricks like how to switch weapons depending on the situation, what clever cogs. There's even more like new sound effects, turrets to build and even a defibrillator to bring your buddies back to life.

For me it's probably one of the most exciting open-world survival games (next to Valheim) supported on Linux. The idea that you build up a base that doubles as a moving drill you walk around inside, it's just awesome and very steampunk with the inspiration and design work. Lots of levers to pull and big buttons to press.

You can buy Volcanoids on Steam . It's 25% off until January 25.

Odin is finally pleased so the open-world survival game Valheim releases on February 2

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Monday, 18 January, 2021 - 16:11 · 2 minutes

Odin has finally had enough sacrifices and shall be releasing Valheim from Iron Gate AB will enter Early Access with Linux and Windows support on February 2.

What is it? A brutal multiplayer exploration and survival game set in a procedurally-generated purgatory inspired by viking culture. Battle, build, and conquer your way to a saga worthy of Odin’s patronage! With low-poly artwork and a very flexible building system it looks absolutely brilliant. The early builds they had available were seriously promising back in 2018 so I'm personally excited to see how far they've progress with it in that time.

Check out the new absolutely rockin' trailer below:

    youtube video thumbnail
    Watch video on YouTube.com

It has a lot of nice ideas that help set it apart from other similar survival games. With the starting area being more peaceful, allowing you to build up and explore a little with it getting progressively harder as you venture from the centre of the lands. That should suit quite a lot of different people to play together with different styles.

    Feature Highlight:

    • Huge procedurally-generated world - explore and inhabit mystical lands, from mysterious forests to imposing snow-topped mountain ranges and stunning meadows, complete with their own creatures of legend to battle and wildlife to hunt.
    • Co-op multiplayer- - Whether you want to brave the lands alone or venture with trusted allies, Valheim supports independent, player-hosted servers and unlimited world creation.
    • Punishing dodge & block based combat system with a wide range of weapons
    • Build & sail ships - from flimsy rafts to imposing warships, build legendary vessels to conquer the seas and discover new lands.
    • Summon and defeat vengeful primordial bosses of myth and legend, and collect trophies to progress and craft new powerful items
    • Flexible house and base building system - raise mead halls, farms, settlements outposts, castles and more.
    • Intuitive item crafting - forge the finest weapons and armour, and craft food and mead.
    • Dedicated server- for players who want to run a persistent server.

Once the initial kinks are worked out, as no doubt there will be some with it being in Early Access, we might have to get up a community server for this one.

The developer has also been creating Valheim on Linux. So not only does it support Linux, it's being made with it. I always love to see more of that. Lenna's Inception is another recent (that we've written about) example of that.

You can wishlist / follow Valheim on Steam .

Dust: The Abandoned Land is a surprising free open-world 2D survival game

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Wednesday, 13 January, 2021 - 11:54 · 1 minute

Dust: The Abandoned Land is an in-development 2D open-world survival game, one that has a surprising amount of features and you can play it online with others. Developed by Mathieu Guillame-Bert, a Google Zurich staffer as a hobby.

Set in a post-apocalyptic randomly generated world, Dust is a real-time survival game with permadeath in an open-world world filled full of strange creatures, robots, bandits, survivors, and remains of military groups. For a free and unfinished game, it's actually quite amusing to play.

Part of what makes it interesting is the AI system, which the developer mentions uses dynamic behaviour trees that they wrote a piece on a few years ago. It actually feels a little like Project Zomboid, with the Zombies being replaced by a lot more variety.

    Watch video on YouTube.com

With a nicer UI, it could be something but for now considering it's free and fun to explore and survive in it's easily worth a look as it costs nothing other than time and you might find something you love. A huge world to explore, lots of variety in the encounters, some fun weapons, a crafting system and you can play it alone in single-player or online with others. Lots to like about it.

Find it free on the official site .
