Alan Wake II coming in mid-October, promising another cryptic PC powerhouse

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Wednesday, 24 May, 2023 - 22:37

    Alan Wake trailer image

Enlarge / There's really not much more context for what's going to happen in Alan Wake 2 than what you can see in this image. Well, maybe a typewriter.

Alan Wake 2 has a release date, an evocative trailer, and the requisite amount of meta-contextual horror to come.

The latest title from Control maker Remedy Entertainment, a sequel to the acclaimed Alan Wake will arrive on October 17, 2023, on PC (exclusive to the Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Given the studio's track record, we expect to see some impressive ray tracing, storylines that make you question what a story really is, and novel gameplay conceits.

In typical Remedy style, you don't get much direct information, but instead, some teasing hints. After some flashes of cultish horror, we meet Saga Anderson, an FBI agent that Remedy states ( in a PlayStation blog post) will be a second playable character.

Dealmaster: 1-day-only Nintendo Switch, Microsoft 365 deals; plus PS5 and AirTags

Kicking off the week, we have a couple of today-only sales, including a rare discount on Nintendo's Switch OLED and a free $50 Amazon gift card deal on Microsoft's 365 Family office software (with some major caveats). There are also price cuts on the PS5 God of War Ragnarök bundle and Apple's four-pack of AirTags.

    Nintendo Switch OLED for $310 ( $350 )

Nintendo's Switch OLED is the best Switch console you can buy. In our review , we praised the larger, upgraded display's completely blacked-out pixels and infinite contrast ratio whether gaming before bed or during the day. We also appreciated the bigger, sturdier hinge, Ethernet-toting dock, and 64GB standard storage, as opposed to 32GB on other Switch models.

We still think the Switch Lite is an unbeatable deal in portable gaming for $200 , but for those among us who like the best of the best, the Switch OLED is the ultimate portable gaming device. With today's one-day-only $40 discount , it's a bit more affordable now, too. Samsung's 256GB microSD Evo Select is also on sale for $20 , which pairs well with the Switch for game storage.

Life is Strange: True Colors hands-on preview: Not afraid to make you sad

      Steve Haske · news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Monday, 6 September, 2021 - 12:00

This preview is based on limited impressions tested on PS5 and made available by Square Enix ahead of the game's September 10 launch.

With four games released over the past six years (including one mini-spinoff, The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit ), the Life is Strange series has established a reputation as an unlikely type of narrative adventure. Its YA protagonists, hipster-slanted coming-of-age stories, and proximity to trauma make it part of a specific genre, and the series has proven unexpectedly adept at mostly reinventing itself from entry to entry.

In theory, these underpinnings might suggest a (hear us out) Silent Hill -style problem that the series has so far managed to avoid. But where Konami's survival horror series punished its protagonists through unique, hellish manifestations reflecting their specific inner demons, Life is Strange 's supernatural abilities empower its characters. Our protagonists aren't defined by their tragedies. They could be anything, which allows series developers much more freedom to try new ideas.

New PS5 model’s weight-loss mystery solved: A smaller, likely better heatsink

      Sam Machkovech · news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Monday, 30 August, 2021 - 16:42 · 1 minute

Over the weekend, Sony's curious new PlayStation 5 hardware revision —same price, same performance, slightly changed internals—began finding its way into fans' hands, and at least one rushed to figure out exactly why it weighs 0.6 lb less than the launch model . The most obvious answer, at least parceled out on a measuring scale, is a smaller, wholly redesigned heatsink element, though the person behind the discovery didn't necessarily make the right call about this PS5 revision being "worse."

Tech reporter Austin Evans posted his findings on YouTube on Saturday, after sourcing a new Japanese PS5 and upgrading his purchase to overnight shipping (holy bank account, Batman). The resulting breakdown is informative, though not entirely authoritative. Evans and fellow YouTuber Jimmy Champane tore down both the new PS5 and a launch model in short order, noticing almost immediately that the newer heatsink takes up far less physical real estate. Before the teardown is complete, one visible heatsink portion near the system's primary fan is reduced enough that a finger can fit in, but that's nothing compared to the final comparison.

The launch model's heatsink included a complete airflow-encompassing plate of copper, along with conductive metal all along the way. The updated heatsink, on the other hand, has been re-engineered to reduce both the base copper plate and the amount of metal attached to the cooling system's heat pipes, all while leaving the heat pipe concept intact—and likely still relying on a liquid metal application on PS5's System-on-Chip (SoC). After weighing the two consoles while fully assembled, Evans then weighed the extracted heatsink constructions, finding these accounted for nearly the entirety of the 0.6 lb difference.
