qomp is a brilliant example of minimalist mechanics and a fantastic idea

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Friday, 5 February, 2021 - 19:39 · 1 minute

In the game qomp you are the ball, the ball that has been thrown around games like Pong for a very long time and you've had enough - it's time to escape. Note : personal purchase.

qomp is a small game about freedom. It won't take you long to get through, it's not complicated and it's absolutely brilliant. Using a single button, you will be changing the direction of the ball to get through various different challenges and overcome several different game mechanics. It really doesn't look or sound like much but its one of those times were the simplicity makes it so good.

For a game that has nothing but a single button and the same main mechanic all the way through, as you click click click to constantly change direction and avoid all sorts of hazards - it's surprisingly atmospheric. It gives off dungeon vibes with the camera effect and dark colouring, along with the pumping music to keep you going.

Difficult too. I've cursed at my screen and my slow clicking ability numerous times while bouncing through the various levels it offers. It's a good test of reaction timing and your ability to think quickly often, as well as understanding how the angles of everything you're bouncing off will affect your ball trajectory to plan ahead. I'm really not joking on the difficulty of some parts of it, I even held my breath a few times and hoped for a bit of luck. No punishments here though, just go back to a checkpoint and click around around and see if you can bounce to safety.

I will admit to the below section kicking my butt for a while but it shows the great design work that went into it.

You're an escaped pong ball trying to escape to freedom, what more could you want for a few hours? Honestly I think it's absolutely brilliant and well worth picking up.

A finely polished experience you won't forget.

You can buy it on itch.io and Steam .

Silly comedy adventure Edgar - Bokbok in Boulzac gets a permanent price drop

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Tuesday, 19 January, 2021 - 12:49 · 1 minute

Edgar - Bokbok in Boulzac, a comedy point and click adventure by La Poule Noire that released in early 2020 has been given a big permanent price cut.

A delightfully silly adventure involved a strange old hermit and his pet chicken, who go on an adventure to save their prized squash crops and end up exploring the bright lights of the big city, Boulzac, where an 800 year old fire rages beneath the surface, and weird things are afoot.

    Feature Highlight:

    • Explore a strange and comic universe, meeting its unhinged (and unforgettable) inhabitants and discovering ancient secrets.
    • Unveil the surreal conspiracy holding Boulzac together. Trek above and below the light city.
    • Enjoy whip-smart dialogue, surreal adventures and satire.
    • Equal parts whimsical and dark: you’ve not met a cosmic horror like this before.

In my previous post talking about the game, I noted how it was a "unique linear point and click adventure with fun characters, a pleasing style and it's definitely worth playing thanks to the Chicken". Quirky characters, a really odd but fun story and easily worth a look if you love short adventures that will only take you 2-3 hours to finish.

Now you can jump in easier too with the price cut from £14.49 to £5.79.

Find it up on Steam .

Intergalactic Wizard Force is a highly amusing short free adventure out now

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Thursday, 3 December, 2020 - 11:54 · 1 minute

Intergalactic Wizard Force, developed for the AdventureX Game Jam is well worth a look as it's absolutely hilarious and won't take you long to complete.

With its own theme song, fully voiced characters and artwork from Jacob Janerka (Paradigm) it's quite an experience. Janerka described it as "like the hit movie Twins (1988 film) except they are Space Wizards dealing with intergalactic bureaucracy".

    20310407841606994973gol1.png

Join Prince Xandar , hero of the cosmos and Maldrek, the galactic wizard on an adventure through time (forwards) and space (forwards, but also sideways and diagonally).

    • Swap between wizards to cast their own spells, such as Charm Humanoid, Mesmer, and Hyperdrive.
    • Fly between 18 quintillion* planets
    • Meet a bizarre cast of space aliens and wizard all over them.
    • Enjoy "Space Chicken" responsibly.

*Early estimates may be exaggerated, but at there's at least 2.

Absolutely wonderful. Such ridiculous humour, with "wizards" that have some…questionable magic that's very much not really magic. It's seriously weird, like playing through an old late-night cartoon full of questionable characters.

Made with PowerQuest , a tool for building 2d point and click adventure games in Unity.

You can grab Intergalactic Wizard Force free (or donate) on itch.io and I suggest you do.

Delores: A Thimbleweed Park Mini-Adventure now available for Linux

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Wednesday, 23 September, 2020 - 09:55 · 1 minute

After a short Beta testing period , it seems Delores: A Thimbleweed Park Mini-Adventure is now out properly for Linux from developer Ron Gilbert and Terrible Toybox.

What is it? Delores: A Thimbleweed Park Mini-Adventure started out as a prototype for Ron Gilbert's new point-and-click adventure game engine and grew into a fun little game. Don't think of it as a sequel to Thimbleweed Park, as it's not, it's a mini-adventure for fans who want a little bit more. It's also free!

    Feature Highlight:

    • Non-stop point-and-click fun!
    • Return to Thimbleweed Park, the setting of the Best Adventure of 2017 award from Adventure Gamers and the Thank You for Not Still Living at Home award from Ron Gilbert’s mom. (Or, visit Thimbleweed Park for the first time! No prior knowledge required to play!)
    • Explore Main Street and solve puzzles to take pictures for Thimbleweed Park’s hard-hitting newspaper. One of these days Natalie will get that Pulitzer, and it will be thanks to your help!
    • Tackle increasingly difficult assignments as you get closer to figuring out what the heck is going on in Thimbleweed Park this time.
    • Sample a new adventure game engine by Ron Gilbert, who created Lucasfilm’s SCUMM engine and classic games Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island back in the day.

Interested in game development? The code for Delores itself as a game is available on GitHub , so you can see how it all works. It has a custom license so it's not open source - but still nice to see.

You can pick it up for Linux free on Steam , with GOG to follow sometime soon hopefully.

If you had played it with Steam Play Proton before and have issues getting Steam to download the Linux build, you can use the Steam Linux Runtime container which forces a reset and will enable you to get the actual Linux build. Don't know what the container is? Here's a few reminders: #1 , #2 , #3 .
