New offer gives Ubisoft, not Microsoft, control of Activision game-streaming rights

In a major restructuring of its long-proposed acquisition plans for Activision Blizzard , Microsoft has announced that the cloud-streaming rights for current and future Activision titles will be controlled by Ubisoft rather than Microsoft itself. The move is an effort to ameliorate concerns from UK regulators who blocked the proposed acquisition in April over potential impacts on competition in the cloud-gaming space.

The newly proposed deal covers perpetual, worldwide streaming rights for all current Activision games and those released in the next 15 years, according to an announcement from Microsoft Vice Chair President Brad Smith. Ubisoft will have exclusive control of those streaming rights outside of the European Union, allowing the company to make those games available on its own Ubisoft+ service and to license them out to other cloud-gaming providers (including Microsoft itself). In the EU, Microsoft will pay to license those Activision streaming rights back from Ubisoft to satisfy promises made to the European Commission regarding free licensing to competing cloud-gaming providers.

In a statement provided to Ars Technica, Ubisoft said the deal would allow Activision titles to be offered via Ubisoft+ Multi Access on PC, Xbox, and Amazon Luna, as well as via Ubisoft+ Classics on PlayStation . "Today’s deal will give players even more opportunities to access and enjoy some of the biggest brands in gaming," said Chris Early, Ubisoft SVP of Strategic Partnerships and Business Development, in the statement.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 studio rocked by reported gov’t labor investigation

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Tuesday, 28 February, 2023 - 20:13 · 1 minute

The team that brought you this <em>Beyond Good & Evil 2</em> concept art is not doing well, according to a new report.

Enlarge / The team that brought you this Beyond Good & Evil 2 concept art is not doing well, according to a new report.

If you've been waiting patiently for Beyond Good & Evil 2 since its first announcement back in 2008 , we have some bad news about the studio responsible for the long-delayed project's development. Kotaku now reports that Ubisoft Montpellier has lost its managing director amid a local government investigation into labor policies that have left "an unprecedented number of developers experiencing burnout and going on sick leave."

Ubisoft Montpellier, which also developed the first Beyond Good & Evil two decades ago now, is being looked at by its local branch of the Inspection du Travail , according to "three sources familiar with the development," cited by Kotaku. In December, that office reportedly started looking into reports that dozens of developers had taken extended leave over stress or sickness over the last year. Employees have been interviewed regarding their health and well-being by a third party, according to the report.

“The health and wellness of our teams is an ongoing priority,” an Ubisoft spokesperson told Kotaku. “Given the length of the development cycle with Beyond Good & Evil 2 , the Montpellier development team is undergoing well-being assessments through a third-party for preventative measures and to evaluate where additional support may be needed.”

Far Cry 6 hands-on preview: Enough issues to make us say “ay, Dios mío”

      Sam Machkovech · news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Tuesday, 31 August, 2021 - 16:00

The trailer for Far Cry 6 featuring a very familiar voice for modern TV fans.

Roughly six weeks before Far Cry 6 's upcoming launch on PC and consoles, Ubisoft elected to unlock the entirety of this first-person shooter's opening beats for a press-only, hands-on demo. This kind of access differs from the carefully selected "slices" we sometimes play in preview events, as those are meant to show an unfinished game in its best light.

But after going hands-on with Far Cry 6 for nearly four hours, I was reminded why game studios are sometimes cagey about prerelease reveals.

The demo I played was equal parts massive and unwieldy. I couldn't help but feel like hundreds of Ubisoft staffers' efforts to create a beautiful and convincing pseudo-Cuban adventure wound up squeezed into a single, tiny clown car of a package. The issues didn't end with game-breaking bugs and wonky AI, which may very well be resolved on, erm, October 7. At this point, I'm more concerned about uninspiring new loadout systems, a narrative tone that can't make up its mind, and an absolute yawn of a return to the Ubisoft open-world bloat of old.

A potential hostage situation is reportedly taking place at the building in which game developer Ubisoft's Montreal office is housed.

Canadian media began reporting a major police operation outside the Ubisoft Montreal headquarters around 1:30pm Eastern time. Montreal police confirmed that there is an "ongoing police operation" at the intersection where Ubisoft Montreal sits, adding, "We ask people to avoid the area. The SVPM is currently validating information and more details will follow."

Live-streamed footage from French-language outlet LCN showed a group of people together on the roof deck of the building behind a makeshift barricade seemingly constructed of folding tables leaning against the access door. Developer Eric Pope confirmed in a Tweet that the individuals on the roof were indeed Ubisoft employees, saying, "This is insane. This is my team on the roof."

Ubisoft reporte Far Cry 6 et Rainbow Six Quarantine !

      Olivier · news.movim.eu / JournalDuGeek · Saturday, 31 October, 2020 - 10:00 · 1 minute

      Marie Turcan · news.movim.eu / Numerama · Friday, 16 October, 2020 - 09:20
