Trip to Moscow to review economy delayed indefinitely after protests it would ‘normalise relations with aggressor’

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has indefinitely postponed a staff mission to Moscow this week to review the Russian economy for the first time since the invasion of Ukraine, after the move came under heavy criticism from several of Kyiv’s European allies.

After revelations in the Guardian of widespread condemnation, the IMF said it would spend more time gathering information for a “rigorous analysis”.

Floods in Poland and wildfires in Portugal show reality of climate breakdown, says EU

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Wednesday, 18 September - 12:36

Emergency crews battle to reinforce defences around Wrocław, Poland’s third city, amid devastating rainfall

Soldiers, emergency workers and volunteers battled through the night to reinforce defences around Wrocław, Poland’s third biggest city, as the EU said that flooding in central Europe happening simultaneously alongside wildfires in Portugal showed climate breakdown in action.

More than five times the average rainfall for the whole of September has fallen in five days on swathes of Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia, triggering devastating flooding that has killed 22 people in four countries.

Don’t fear the boomers! How Poland is celebrating its old people – and making life better for every age

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Wednesday, 18 September - 11:00 · 1 minute

While the rest of Europe worries about a ‘silver tsunami’ or ‘demographic bomb’, the cities of Wrocław and Kraków are treating their ageing populations as an opportunity rather than a burden – with remarkable results

On a balmy Friday afternoon earlier this month, the most feared group of people in Europe breached the 13th-century defensive walls of Wrocław and poured into the town square. Some wore blue berets, others cowboy hats, straw boaters and, in one instance, a three-tiered cake stand adorned with kitchen sponges and pompoms. Resistance was futile: less than an hour after their arrival, the mayor ceremonially handed over the key to the Polish city’s gate to the flamboyantly dressed couple they had chosen as their queen and king.

Baby boomers are often talked of as an existential threat to Europe’s economic prosperity and welfare state model. The population of men and women born in the mid-1940s to mid-60s, who are now in their 60s, 70s and 80s, is calculated by the World Health Organization to have overtaken people younger than 15 in Europe this year, and it is estimated boomers will make up more than 30% of the EU’s population by 2100. They are forecast to leave workplaces understaffed and healthcare services overwhelmed. Economists talk of them in terms of natural catastrophes (“the silver tsunami”) or acts of terrorism (“the demographic bomb”).

Sweden’s ‘snitch law’ immigration plan prompts alarm across society

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Sunday, 11 August - 10:31

Proposal, which would force public sector workers to report undocumented people, decried as ‘utterly inhumane’

Doctors, social workers and librarians are among those in Sweden who have sounded the alarm over a proposal being explored by a government-appointed committee that would force public sector workers to report undocumented people to authorities.

The proposal – referred to as the “snitch law” by some – was among the many measures included in a 2022 agreement struck between four rightwing parties in the country. The deal paved the way for a coalition government involving three of the country’s centre-right parties with parliamentary support from the far-right anti-immigration Sweden Democrats (SD).
