The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall game engine Daggerfall Unity now feature complete

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Wednesday, 9 December, 2020 - 10:48 · 1 minute

Daggerfall Unity is the open source game engine built with Unity for running the 1996 classic The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall and it's coming along very nicely.

A new release just went up with Daggerfall Unity 0.10.28, which the developer mentions is now "feature complete" and so it will be moving from Alpha to Beta status soon. Going by their roadmap , that sure is a lot of completed items. It's not finished though, as they will move onto bug fixing, minor adjustments, modding, translations and so on.

What's new with this release? Large HUD support, along with the ability to have the HUD docked or undocked meaning it can either stretch or have a more fixed size - good for bigger resolutions where it might get too stretched.

    5891186491607510269gol1.jpg17810770201607510367gol1.jpg

There's more ways to configure the HUD now in the settings file too, and a big overhaul to the movement system to better match the original. They can't match the movement system exactly, instead going for a system that enables you to feel more powerful and faster when you're a higher level. The biggest change appears to be the jumping ability, with it now giving small jumps to low levels and bigger / longer jumps for higher levels.

Plenty more smaller and varied fixes also made it in, there was a lot of little bits of fine tuning.

Since it's such an old game, it's also freely available as Bethesda Softworks put it up as a free download back in 2009. This means it really can live forever with an up to date cross-platform game engine. Daggerfall Unity isn't quite the same though of course, as it does have some unique enhancements so it's more like "Classic Daggerfall Plus" as the developer calls it.

Find it on the official site and GitHub .

The Long Dark has a big new Survival Mode update out now with a new region

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Tuesday, 8 December, 2020 - 13:09 · 1 minute

The Long Dark is probably one of the most beautiful survival games, and quite brutal too. Ready to get cold again? A big new update to the Survival Mode is out now.

Gameplay in The Long Dark is split between playing through the episodic story (with Episode 4 due in 2021 ) and the open-world Survival Mode where you do whatever the heck you want. This latest free expansion named Hesitant Prospect adds in the Ash Canyon region where you "might find an abandoned mine that hides treasures worth more than gold to any survivor" but to get there you have to cross some worn out looking rope-bridges — eek!

14812048231607432920gol1.png That does not look particularly safe…

You also get access to Crampons, which will help prevent sprains and enable easier travel over weak ice. Plus there's a new Technical Pack that adds a permanent capacity buff to your inventory for all that burning wood you need.

A new challenge mode has been added too, based upon the Halloween event where you're being hunted by an invisible force. If you complete it, you will get a Darkwalker Feat to enable in Survival Mode to give you a stamina boost at night but it will drain you during the day. There's also a new setting where you can force an Endless Night for an extra challenging run - better wrap up warm.

    See their roundup video below:

Unity acquires the open source MLAPI networking library

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Friday, 4 December, 2020 - 10:04 · 1 minute

Unity Technologies who work on the Unity game engine have announced that they have acquired the networking library MLAPI, along with the creator joining Unity.

In the post Unity's Brandi House mentioned how they're trying to expand the Unity ecosystem with a "first-party multiplayer networking solution for GameObjects that is easy to set up and extend, scales to meet the needs of high-performance titles, and is seamlessly integrated into the Unity ecosystem" and after considering many they ultimately decided to pull in MLAPI along with its creator, Albin Corén .

The good news is that it remains open source and will be developed in the open as expected, and they will not be changing the license which is currently as MIT. So now we have another open source solution for networking, fully backed by a big company - nice.

Unity said they will be expanding it in these areas, in addition to working on documentation and samples:

    • Remote procedure calls (RPCs): Currently MLAPI has two RPC systems, “convenience RPCs” and “performance RPCs.” The convenience RPCs incur a performance overhead that performance RPCs address, but they are not straightforward to use. We are investigating options to replace both with a system that is performant, is easy to use, and has clean usage patterns.
    • Snapshot generation: MLAPI’s current design poses challenges for incorporating features like delta compression or client-side prediction. To overcome this roadblock, we’re working on separating snapshot generation from packet-sending systems.
    • Network relevance model: Sending the right data to each player enables developers to minimize their bandwidth costs and maximize players gameplay experiences. We’ll change MLAPI so new methods can be used to increase performance, lower the likelihood of cheating, and lower operating costs by lowering the amount of data sent.

See the announcement here and find the code on GitHub .

Intergalactic Wizard Force is a highly amusing short free adventure out now

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Thursday, 3 December, 2020 - 11:54 · 1 minute

Intergalactic Wizard Force, developed for the AdventureX Game Jam is well worth a look as it's absolutely hilarious and won't take you long to complete.

With its own theme song, fully voiced characters and artwork from Jacob Janerka (Paradigm) it's quite an experience. Janerka described it as "like the hit movie Twins (1988 film) except they are Space Wizards dealing with intergalactic bureaucracy".

    20310407841606994973gol1.png

Join Prince Xandar , hero of the cosmos and Maldrek, the galactic wizard on an adventure through time (forwards) and space (forwards, but also sideways and diagonally).

    • Swap between wizards to cast their own spells, such as Charm Humanoid, Mesmer, and Hyperdrive.
    • Fly between 18 quintillion* planets
    • Meet a bizarre cast of space aliens and wizard all over them.
    • Enjoy "Space Chicken" responsibly.

*Early estimates may be exaggerated, but at there's at least 2.

Absolutely wonderful. Such ridiculous humour, with "wizards" that have some…questionable magic that's very much not really magic. It's seriously weird, like playing through an old late-night cartoon full of questionable characters.

Made with PowerQuest , a tool for building 2d point and click adventure games in Unity.

You can grab Intergalactic Wizard Force free (or donate) on itch.io and I suggest you do.

With multiple rooms to break out of that are full of riddles, clues, and mysteries to uncover it's a highly interactive game with items everywhere you can examine to try and find your way out. They here, is to fully explore your surroundings. It's built firmly with co-op in mind, with it being possible to have six player try to solve the rooms together. It was previously in Early Access with the 1.0 release adding in the third chapter.

Nice to see more escape room styled puzzle games, especially those where the developer supports Linux directly. Overall though, there's just not a whole lot of good 3D first-person experiences around like this on any platform. There's plenty of 2D point & click puzzle games and hidden object games that have you do a similar thing but it's just not the same.

Hopefully then we will see more like Mad Experiments: Escape Room in future. So far, it seems most users have enjoyed this one with around 64 user reviews giving it a "Very Positive" rating overall.

You can buy it on Humble Store or Steam .

Créez un jeu vidéo LEGO en moins d’une heure sans coder !

      Remi Lou · news.movim.eu / JournalDuGeek · Tuesday, 27 October, 2020 - 10:30 · 1 minute

Steampunk grid-based dungeon-crawler Vaporum: Lockdown is out for Linux now

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Friday, 16 October, 2020 - 15:49 · 1 minute

Vaporum: Lockdown is a rather gorgeous steampunk dungeon crawler from Fatbot Games, which serves as a prequel to the original and it's now supported on Linux.

In this latest release you follow the story of Ellie Teller, a scientist who is a part of a mysterious research project in the middle of an ocean. After disastrous events, she struggles to survive and escape the tower of Arx Vaporum. While it's a prequel, the developer noted that it "expands on everything that made the original game good".

    youtube video thumbnail
    Watch video on YouTube.com

    Feature Highlight:

    • Old-school grid-based dungeon crawler with modern audiovisuals and controls.
    • First-person real-time combat with deadly foes with varied abilities and behaviors.
    • Stop time mode where time only passes when you act, giving you unlimited time to reason about your next best move.
    • Intriguing story following a fully voiced female protagonist.
    • Unique gadget-based RPG system with tons of customization, tons of loot, and tons of synergies to find.
    • Mind-bending puzzles and hazards.
    • Immersive steampunk setting.
    • Full controller support.
    • Localized in 8 languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Russian, Polish, Japanese, and Chinese.

Their PR team already sent over a key a while ago, and checking on the Linux release today everything appears to work just fine. Even when turning up the Supersampling Scale to "1.5x", the performance seemed to be great so it looks like they did another great job on their Linux version.

3168755521602863194gol1.jpg Pictured - Vaporum: Lockdown on Linux with "1.5x Supersampling", performance check with MangoHud .

We had a short wait of a month to get the actual Linux version but it looks like it was worth it. I'll be taking a proper look at it when time allows, as I very much enjoyed the original Vaporum.

Available for Linux now from Humble Store and Steam . It seems GOG do not yet have a Linux build for it.

NENA is a sweet little puzzle adventure where you control a robot with telepathy

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Friday, 16 October, 2020 - 13:18 · 2 minutes

NENA is a new adventure following Botley, a robot that wants more than a life disposing of self-aware robotic boxes.

At some point in the far future, robotics and AI are so advanced that we had to pass laws to give them full awareness of life and it all seems as terrible as you can imagine. NENA might not look like much but it's quite a surprising little adventure with some amusing interactions.

In this short, top-down action-puzzler you start when you're first turned on, only to be told right away that your only reason for "living" is to put little boxes into a furnace to dispose of them — forever. The problem is, you're self-aware, you know about the world and the boxes you're supposed to burn to ashes are also aware. Thankfully, the boxes were programmed to like everything, even pain…

6331078241602852499gol1.jpg Not exactly the most exciting life.

However, you have a special ability. You're no ordinary little bot. You're able assume control of others through some kind of telepathic-wireless connection, which quickly allows you to escape and go on an adventure because clearly your designers didn't do a very good job at securing your workspace.

On your travels, you meet some pretty terrible decisions made by humanity, like a robotic screen that's just as self-aware as all other robots but it only has a mouth. So it can't actually see, feel or hear. I feel a bit bad for laughing at the dialogue as it's amusingly harsh. And from there you proceed through different puzzle-challenges, which can become somewhat challenging as you assume control of different robots, turrets and even bullets.

    8547026031602853882gol1.jpg

Take control of a bullet mid-flight, then redirect it to bounce around and hit targets. You not only need good aim and reflexes but a bit of quick-thinking too.

It's not just puzzles and avoiding a few turrets though, it throws in boss fights at you and becomes almost like a bullet-hell in some sections. You can't take control of all bullets, only certain types and enemies have multiple different attacks so it's about avoiding (wish your Dash ability) and taking control when you can. That, along with all of the whimsical dialogue as well of course.

    7164298211602854003gol1.jpg

NENA ended up being quite a huge surprise. The developer sent along a key via our Steam Curator (go follow us!), and it really is a wonderfully designed game and super charming.

Another example of an indie developer being able to offer a really great experience with so little. It's quite short, overall you're looking at around 2-3 hours depending on how challenging you find the action and the puzzles. Absolutely worth it though. That ending — gosh.

Have a look at the fun trailer below:

    youtube video thumbnail
    Watch video on YouTube.com

    Feature Highlight:

    • Possession System: You control Botley, and by extent control the world around him. Botley can't jump, shoot, or explode. but the objects he controls can.
    • Fight bosses: With each of the three levels come a unique boss! Can you master telepathy and take them down?
    • Embrace the UNKNOWN: Venture forth on a quest to gain freedom for all Robot-kind!

You can buy NENA on Steam and itch.io .

Ready for a laugh? Comedy point and clicking adventure Plot of the Druid gains a demo

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Friday, 16 October, 2020 - 09:45 · 1 minute

While the actual release is a while away and it's still in development, Adventure4Life Studios have put up a demo of their comedy point and click adventure Plot of the Druid.

Sounds like it's going to be a completely ridiculous game too, inspired by Simon the Sorcerer, Discworld and Harry Potter with an attempt at sarcastic British humour where you harness the power of nature to solve problems. There will be party crashing, wood spirits with hangovers, you get to avoid awkward social situations by turning into a small furry creature and plenty more.

As they said it would , it's now gained a demo which they said acts like a prologue to the full game so you can see some of what to expect ahead of a planned Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. Here's some footage of the demo:

    youtube video thumbnail
    Watch video on YouTube.com

Looks like it's going to be a pretty great point and click adventure, the demo certainly gave off a good impression and I enjoyed the little bits of puzzling gameplay it offered and the fun interactions. There's a certain feel of quality to it that I think players will enjoy.

    Planned features include:

    • Innovative mechanism where the player can decide whether to deal with a situation as a human or a ferocious animal. Well, maybe not that ferocious, but one with a unique skill set
    • Harness the powers of nature in order to solve puzzles (sometimes an earthquake is just what’s needed to get people’s attention)
    • Beautiful hand-painted HD artwork in the style of old-school pixel art
    • Dozens of wacky characters, ALL fully voiced
    • Cool references to classic LucasArts and Sierra games
    • Two difficulty levels: Young Apprentice and Master of Disaster. Finish the game to earn a digital certificate with your name on it, signed by the Elder Druids themselves!
    • Many MANY smooth 2D animations, including amusing and thrilling cutscenes
    • Over an hour of immersive, charming background music
