Oddventure RPG smashes Kickstarter goal and puts out a Linux demo

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Wednesday, 12 May, 2021 - 16:17 · 1 minute

Oddventure is a crazy turn-based RPG about the misadventures of Charlie, a girl trapped in a cursed fairy-tale world.

We previously covered the launch of the Kickstarter, which at the time did not have a Linux build of the demo available. After asking the developer, they promptly put one up. As it turns out, it's using the open source Godot Engine too which we weren't aware of before! Wonderful to see more excellent looking games use it.

"Oddventure is a JRPG about the misadventures of Charlie - a nihilistic and rebellious teenage girl with anger issues and social awkwardness. Charlie searches for her troublesome brother Bonzo and ultimately for a way back home. The setting is the Kingdom of Luxia, a land straight from original Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales with a dark, Nietzschean twist."

One note: currently it seems the battle UI doesn't like the gamepad action button, so you need to use keyboard Spacebar. The developer has been made aware of this.

After playing the demo, I'm absolutely sold and decided to back it personally. It has some good quirky dark humour and an excellent style. Very intrigued to see the full game and I expect this to absolutely be a big hit when it releases in full later in 2022.

You can fund it on Kickstarter and follow on Steam . Download the new Linux demo from itch.io or Game Jolt .

Since it has already hit the goal, we've added it to our Crowdfunding Page .

Dota 2 - The International 10 returns in August with the biggest esport prize pool ever

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Wednesday, 12 May, 2021 - 10:41 · 1 minute

Ready for some intense Dota 2? The Aegis of Champions is in play once more! Valve has confirmed that The International 10 shall return officially begin in August.

In a fresh blog post Valve mentioned The International 10 will take place this August in Stockholm, Sweden. Beginning with the Group Stage which takes place between August 5 - 8 with the big main event kicking off on August 10 and lasts until August 15.

This is quite a historic event too. Not just because it's Valve and Dota 2, and because of all the delays with this marking something of a return to normalcy for esports - but because of the prize pool. The total has been set at $40,018,195 - which makes it the single biggest prize pool in esports history (beating their own previous record). An absolutely staggering amount of money, one I can't even imagine ever seeing 1% of.

Going along with all this, Valve reiterated their plan to have content released on a more regular schedule, rather than drop everything big in one go for the Battle Pass. They will be shipping two separate events with the first in "mid-to-late June" and the next sometime after The International 10 ends. However, since the Battle Pass funding has already been done, they've added in special Supporters Clubs.

Supporters Clubs are the new way to support your favourites by buying up bundles of badges and seasonal equippable items - 50% of the sales goes to the teams and the content is directly provided by the teams.

Siege Up! is an upcoming full-featured RTS in low-poly style

Ready for your next real-time strategy (RTS)? Siege Up! from developer Denis Zdorovtsov looks like it could be good fun.

With a cute low-poly style in a medieval setting you will be building up walls, and smashing them down with catapults and various other equipment across a story-driven campaign. There's also going to be an in-game editor, full multiplayer and even some co-op missions too. Check out their older trailer below to get an idea of it:

Asking the developer about Linux support, they confirmed: "This is not going to be a problem for me, because of using Unity3d that supports Linux. I myself was using Linux exclusively during my student times, so having more than enough experience of Linux platform for supporting it."

The release is still some time away, with their current target being early December this year. One that could easily be worth keeping an eye on.

Flowstone Saga is an upcoming JRPG-inspired adventure from the dev of Tangledeep

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Tuesday, 11 May, 2021 - 09:14 · 1 minute

Set in the Tangledeep universe and featuring a unique puzzle-battle system, Impact Gameworks have now properly revealed their new JRPG-inspired adventure Flowstone Saga.

Technically, it was already revealed under the name of Puzzle Explorers: A Tangledeep Story but sadly they had a failed crowdfunding attempt for it. So they went back, continued expanding it and providing free Alpha builds to anyone from their official site. Now it's back, bigger and better under the name Flowstone Saga. Check out the trailer below:

    youtube video thumbnail
    Watch video on YouTube.com

"Flowstone Saga is a 16-bit, JRPG-inspired adventure featuring an epic story, charming characters, stunning pixel art, and a unique puzzle battle system! Like our first title Tangledeep, we're combining everything we love about the finest SNES & PlayStation-era RPGs, and infusing it with modern sensibilities in a captivating, original world."

You can actually try it out right now, with Impact Gameworks continuing their full Linux support. Given how beautifully Tangledeep worked on Linux, and Linux builds of this game have been available for a while - we expect it to do quite well overall for Linux fans.

    Features:

    • Battle monsters in a truly unique puzzle-based arena! Using the power of falling blocks, you can attack, defend, and trigger magic effects to thwart everything from lowly Beewis and Cookie Ferrets to Craggans and Giant Axolotls.
    • Immerse yourself in a grand story that begins with the discovery of an ancient power, and grows to encompass a continent-wide conflict
    • Explore the islands of Ocean's End, search for treasure, gather resources, solve ancient puzzles, and unravel mysteries across dozens of handcrafted maps and dungeons
    • Befriend charming characters, helping them to build the town of New Riverstone, learning their stories, and even buddying up for extra battle effects
    • Customize your experience with multiple difficulty settings; enjoy a more relaxed, story-driven playthrough, OR push your puzzle & tactical skills to their limits
    • Feast your eyes on lush, stunningly-detailed pixel art including huge monster sprites, gorgeous backgrounds, and expressive animations
    • Rock out to an epic, adventurous soundtrack with over 50 songs, featuring live performances by world-class musicians

It's crowdfunding on Kickstarter with demo links, and against the $20,000 goal they've already managed nearly $7K in one day pledged - so it looks like it's going on to be a success.

Super Woden GP looks like a promising upcoming top-down racer

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Monday, 10 May, 2021 - 08:14 · 1 minute

Featuring a top-down view, Super Woden GP looks like it could bring some excitement when it comes to Linux later this year from developer ViJuDa.

"Feel the excitement of the 90s with the isometric perspective, its huge number of vehicles and its brilliant soundtrack. More than 60 cars from six manufacturers from different countries to buy, an extensive campaign mode, dozens of circuits, rally stages, championships, and much more awaits you!"

    youtube video thumbnail
    Watch video on YouTube.com

I spoke to the developer ViJuDa who confirmed Linux support. After the awesome experience that art of rally was, I'm keen to see more in this top-down style rather than the ultra realism you get with the likes of the DiRT series. It just gives a different feel, and I grew up with 2D racers so to see them continue to evolve is great.

    Features:

    • An intuitive main map where you will have access to a multitude of possibilities.
    • A huge number of vehicles of all kinds, from compact cars, rally cars, or fast prototypes. You can buy them with the credits you earn as you compete, or even unlock hidden vehicles.
    • 6 vehicle manufacturers from different parts of the world, each with its own history and style.
    • Repaint any vehicle at the shop.
    • Vibrant graphic section that stands out thanks to the artistic style and various display modes.
    • Wide variety of scenarios; like deserts, snowy landscapes, cities, forests and more.
    • Powerful soundtrack, by Franikku Music and Incognito Devito.
    • Local multiplayer for up to 4 players in split screen.

Oddventure is an indie RPG that follows a girl trapped in a cursed fairy-tale world

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Thursday, 6 May, 2021 - 13:18 · 1 minute

This looks absolutely brilliant. Oddventure is an upcoming adventure RPG from Infamous Rabbit and Pineapple Works that follows a girl trapped in a cursed fairy-tale world.

"Oddventure is a JRPG about the misadventures of Charlie - a nihilistic and rebellious teenage girl with anger issues and social awkwardness. Charlie searches for her troublesome brother Bonzo and ultimately for a way back home. The setting is the Kingdom of Luxia, a land straight from original Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales with a dark, Nietzschean twist."

    youtube video thumbnail
    Watch video on YouTube.com

It's currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter, with a goal of €20,000 they need to hit by June 5. I'll be massively surprised if something that looks this good doesn't get funded. Looks like it's off to a good start with over €3,000 pledged less than an hour after launch. For Linux fans, it's good news too as they're supporting "PC (Windows, Mac & Linux) and Nintendo Switch" with it being "actively developing and testing the game on all platforms".

    Features:

    • Meaningful choices – EVERY decision matters, sometimes in the most unpredictable ways.
    • The friendly RPG where nobody has to die... but can. In a horrible way.
    • Unique and EMOTIONAL turn based combat system with cursed-image-like enemies.
    • Countless hidden secrets, references to pop culture and fairy tales.
    • MEDIEVAL FURRIES?!
    • Frog milk as a currency.
    • Bitter-sweet comedy mixed with some coziness and dark humor.
    • Dope and climatic OST.
    • A life changing gaming experience.

Hook up cities with power to create a sustainable future in the upcoming Green With Energy

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Thursday, 6 May, 2021 - 12:06 · 1 minute

Green With Energy from developer Orbifold Software is an upcoming casual puzzle building game, that sees you become an engineer to design a sustainable power grid.

Through various contained levels, it acts like a puzzle game that pulls in small elements from a city-builder while you design your grid and place down power structures. It's supposed to be somewhat relaxed while you iteratively design, test and build power grid designs while balancing budget, efficiency, and environmental impact through different levels and biomes.

Check out their new trailer below:

    youtube video thumbnail
    Watch video on YouTube.com

    Features:

    • Use a range of energy technologies like solar, wind and hydroelectric power
    • Run simulations and evaluate the results to determine your next steps
    • Balance budget, efficiency, and environmental impact
    • Compete with the community via in-game leaderboards to build the best designs
    • Build infrastructure which functions in different weather patterns and climate
    • Store energy in expansive battery farms to avoid power cuts when the sun or wind aren't available

The developer mentioned Linux will be a first-class platform for it.

City builder Nebuchadnezzar is getting fire, crime and disease in the next free update

      Liam Dawe · news.movim.eu / GamingOnLinux · Thursday, 6 May, 2021 - 11:00

Nepos Games have announced the next big update for their isometric Pharaoh-like city-bulder Nebuchadnezzar.

After launching with Linux support back in February, it seems a lot of people really loved the style but there wasn't enough substance to it. Thankfully the first update addressed some of the issues adding in big freeplay maps, new difficulty modes and a tax/wages mechanic too. Now they've teased the 1.2 update with no current release date which will bring in Fire, Crime and Diseases to add a little more challenge to it.

    youtube video thumbnail
    Watch video on YouTube.com

Once they mention a release date for this exciting version 1.2 we will let you know. Seems they're managing to turn it around, with the most recent user reviews on Steam being "Very Positive". Going over some of the user reviews, it seems it lacking a good challenge is what has put a number of players off so perhaps these new systems coming in will bring more players back.

Buy it now on GOG and Steam .
