Move by coalition headed by Geert Wilders’ Freedom party is unlikely to get a positive reception in Brussels

The new Dutch coalition government headed by Geert Wilders’ far-right Freedom party (PVV) appears to be on a collision course with the EU over immigration after formally asking Brussels for an opt-out on asylum rules.

“I have just informed the European Commission that I want a migration ‘opt-out’ on migration matters in Europe for the Netherlands,” the asylum and migration minister Marjolein Faber, a member of the PVV, said on X on Wednesday .

Montella reaps rewards of embracing Turkey’s fan culture pandemonium

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Friday, 5 July - 13:02

Unlike his predecessors, the Italian has the team leaning into their passionate side as fairytale run continues

A train grinds to a halt, mid-journey, in Bakirkoy, Istanbul, in front a giant screen. The conductor and passengers hold their breath, praying Turkey hold on to their 2-1 lead against Austria. All of a sudden there is a huge roar: everyone on the train, outside in the fan park and from Green Lanes, London, to Gaziantep erupts with joy.

Turkey, showcasing their distinctive brand of chaos-ball, have booked a quarter-final slot thanks to their goalkeeper, Mert Gunok, pulling off a Gordon Banks-esque save. He turned to a delirious crowd and celebrated as if he had scored. It is bedlam.

Wout Weghorst, the Netherlands cult hero, hands Koeman a dilemma

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Monday, 17 June - 12:01

Striker’s winner against Poland continued strong scoring run but can he displace Depay against France?

Nothing Like Oranje is the Netherlands’ strap line and quite frankly there is nobody like Wout Weghorst. When the Dutch team bus departed the Volksparkstadion on the fringes of Hamburg at 6.12pm, victory over Poland safely stowed thanks to his super-sub heroics , there could not have been a more popular passenger on board. Weghorst finished the game very much front and centre. Ronald Koeman’s side got increasingly itchy feet after growing restless in search of a winner but with a single whoosh of the left boot, his first touch two minutes after stepping off the bench, Weghorst earned a 2-1 win to ensure a pitch-perfect start to the tournament.

Quite what Koeman does with Weghorst from here is the intriguing bit. About half an hour after Weghorst left the pitch to a sea of orange shirts singing his name, the Netherlands head coach was fielding questions about whether he would promote the striker to his starting lineup against France in Leipzig on Friday. Could Koeman turn to the Burnley striker from the off in the Group D glamour tie?

Wout Weghorst rescues Netherlands after Poland give them a shock

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Sunday, 16 June - 15:22

For all of the concern and conjecture about the Netherlands midfield, it was the absence of a killer instinct in front of goal that had largely eluded them. Cody Gakpo levelled in the first half after Poland took a surprise lead, but failure to make their dominance pay had in effect muted the glorious L-shaped hue of Oranje wrapped around one end of this vast bowl on the edge of town.

At least until the 81st minute, when Wout Weghorst replaced Memphis Depay. Wearing his personalised headband, and having been on the pitch for about 90 seconds, the hulking striker swiped in past Wojciech Szczesny with his first touch. When all else fails, call for Weghorst. Cue the Dutch ceaselessly singing the name of their No 9, contracted to Burnley, during the closing stages.

Dutch lorry drivers could stop bringing goods to UK if post-Brexit delays not cut

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian · Thursday, 13 June - 11:01

Dutch hauliers say facilities at border posts where some trucks are held for up to 20 hours are inadequate

Lorry drivers could start rejecting jobs bringing goods from Europe to the UK unless delays are reduced and driver conditions improved at post-Brexit border posts, the biggest trade body for Dutch hauliers has warned.

Transport en Logistiek Nederland (TLN), which represents 5,000 Dutch transport companies, said its members were facing average waits of more than four hours in Britain because of the new checks brought in after the UK’s exit from the EU, with some being held at border posts for up to 20 hours.
