Two Titans team up to defeat a new foe in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire trailer / ArsTechnica · Monday, 4 December - 17:10 · 1 minute

Warner Bros. debuted the official trailer for the latest film in its Monsterverse saga: Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire .

Legendary Entertainment's MonsterVerse brought Godzilla, King Kong, and various other monsters ( kaiju ) created by Toho Co., Ltd into the same fold. There have been four feature films, plus the animated series Skull Island , which debuted on Netflix earlier this year, and Apple TV+'s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters , which debuted last month and picked up where the 2014 film Godzilla left off. (The season finale will air on January 12, 2024.) And now we have the official trailer for the next film installment— Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire —unveiled during CCXP in Sao Paulo, Brazil, over the weekend.

(Spoilers for Godzilla vs. Kong below.)

Directed by Adam Wingard, Godzilla x Kong picks up sometime after its 2021 predecessor. Godzilla vs. Kong showcased not only a major showdown between its titular titans—in which Godzilla emerged the victor—but also the two teaming up in the climactic finale to take out Mechagodzilla, a telepathically controlled creature with the severed head of Ghidorah. Ghidorah's consciousness took over when Mechagodzilla was activated, and it took both Kong and Godzilla (plus some timely help from humans) to defeat him. (Kong got the final honors, although Godzilla charged the killing ax—made from one of his dorsal plates—with his atomic breath.)

What a lovely day: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga trailer is so shiny and chrome / ArsTechnica · Friday, 1 December - 17:05 · 1 minute

Anya Taylor-Joy plays a younger version of Fury Road 's fierce Imperator in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga .

Among the undisputed highlights of 2015's post-apocalyptic masterpiece Mad Max: Fury Road was Charlize Theron's steely, vengeful Imperator Furiosa , a war captain who turned against the brutal ruler of the Wasteland to free his enslaved "wives." We now have our first look at the younger version of our beloved Imperator with the official trailer for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga —a spinoff prequel film starring Anya Taylor-Joy that traces the origin of this iconic character. It's everything we could want in a Mad Max trailer, and we are so very ready to witness this movie when it hits theaters next spring.

(Spoilers for Mad Max: Fury Road below.)

We met Furiosa early on in Fury Road , working logistics for Immortan Joe (the late Hugh Keays-Byrne), who charged her with ferrying oil from Gas Town to his Citadel with the help of a small crew of War Boys and one of the war rigs—basically tractor trailer trucks souped up with armor and novel weaponry. Furiosa stole the war rig instead, taking Joe's five wives with her. She teamed up with Max to fight off Joe's army as they made their way to the Green Place, where Furiosa grew up. When they finally encountered the Vuvalini of Many Mothers, Furiosa learned that the Green Place was now an uninhabitable swamp. They ultimately returned to the Citadel and overthrew Immortan Joe, and our last image of her was a triumphant Furiosa on a lift rising into the citadel.

News breaks of surprise cameo as Warner Bros. drops final The Flash trailer / ArsTechnica · Wednesday, 24 May, 2023 - 18:48 · 1 minute

Warner Bros has dropped the final trailer for The Flash , coming to theaters on June 16, 2023.

We have one last trailer for The Flash in advance of the film's release on June 16, 2023. Its release coincides with some spoiler-y casting news. Apparently director Andy Muschietti spilled the beans about a surprise cameo in the forthcoming film, according to Variety (huge spoiler at link)—much to the annoyance of some fans.

(Some spoilers below and one major reveal toward the end. We'll give you another heads up when we get there.)

As previously reported , earlier scripts focused on adapting the Flashpoint crossover storyline from the comic books, in which the Scarlet Speedster goes back in time to keep his mother from being murdered, thereby altering the entire timeline. In that alternate world, a young Bruce Wayne is killed rather than his parents. Thomas Wayne becomes Batman, Martha Wayne becomes the Joker, Wonder Woman and Aquaman are bitter enemies, and Superman is a prisoner. Muschietti kept several of the Flashpoint story elements while acknowledging that this would be a different version. And he wanted to include not just Michael Keaton's Batman but Ben Affleck's, too, since he thought Barry's relationship with the latter would make Keaton's inclusion even more powerful.

Godzilla vs. Kong trailer is a rock ‘em, sock ’em monster mashup

      Jennifer Ouellette · / ArsTechnica · Sunday, 24 January, 2021 - 23:02 · 1 minute

Two powerful forces of nature collide in a battle for the ages in Godzilla vs. Kong , premiering simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max on March 26, 2021.

It's powerful Titan pitted against Titan in the first trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong , the fourth film released as part of Legendary Picture's " MonsterVerse " franchise, co-produced and distributed by Warner Bros. Directed by Adam Wingard, the film is not meant to be a remake of the 1962 Japanese classic, King Kong vs. Godzilla; rather, per Wingard , it will directly tie into the events of its 2019 predecessor, Godzilla: King of the Monsters , and feature a "more rugged" and aging Kong.

(Some spoilers for some prior films in the MonsterVerse franchise below.)

The MonsterVerse franchise started in 2014 with Godzilla , in which a soldier tries to return to his family while caught in the crossfire of the battle between Godzilla and a pair of parasitic monsters known as MUTOs . The studio followed up three years later with Kong: Skull Isla nd , set in 1973, in which a team of scientists and soldiers travel to the titular Skull Island and encounter Kong, the last survivor of his species. And in 2019, the studio released Godzilla: King of the Monsters , a sequel to the 2014 film, in which Godzilla and Mothra team up to defeat a prehistoric alien named King Ghidorah, who has awakened other ancient creatures (Titans) to destroy the world.

Wonder Woman 1984 is fun, but doesn’t quite capture magic of its predecessor

      Jennifer Ouellette · / ArsTechnica · Saturday, 26 December, 2020 - 00:10

Count me among the many millions who likely logged onto HBO Max on Christmas Day to watch Wonder Woman 1984 , Director Patty Jenkins' hotly anticipated, oft-delayed stand-alone follow-up to her 2017 global blockbuster, Wonder Woman . I'm a major fan of the latter, which gave us our super-powered Amazonian's origin story, and had high hopes for the follow-up.

Those hopes weren't completely dashed, but they weren't really fulfilled either. While Wonder Woman 1984 still has a bit of the old magic, and its leads all turn in terrific performances, the film is hampered by a frequently nonsensical plot, extraneous showy action sequences, and it's way too heavy-handed with the moralizing. But it still delivers quite a lot of slick, 1980s-infused fun if you turn your brain off and just go with it—and you'll definitely want to stick around for a post-credits scene.

(Some spoilers below, with a couple of major spoilers below the second gallery. We'll give you a heads up when we get there.)

Robert Pattinson is a broody Caped Crusader in first teaser for The Batman

      Jennifer Ouellette · / ArsTechnica · Tuesday, 25 August, 2020 - 00:06 · 1 minute

Robert Pattinson is the latest actor to don the iconic mask and cape in The Batman .

Capping off a long day of sneak peeks, panels, and teaser trailers at DC FanDome this past weekend, Warner Bros. dropped the first teaser for The Batman , starring Robert Pattinson (of High Life and the Twilight franchise) in the title role. It's directed by Matt Reeves ( War for the Planet of the Apes ), and—surprise, surprise—it's another dark, gritty take on the classic superhero—this time with more of a film noir /detective story vibe.

There is a long and tangled backstory to this latest incarnation of the classic comic book superhero. We all know that Ben Affleck was cast as Batman for a three-film trilogy in the DCEU: Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Suicide Squad (2016), and Justice League (2017), which had its own well-publicized production woes . Warner Bros. announced plans for a standalone Batman film in the fall of 2014, with Affleck set to reprise the role, as well as directing and co-writing the screenplay.

The original plan was to set the film within the DCEU, after the events of Justice League . But as Warner Bros. was rethinking the shared-universe model for its superhero films in favor of standalone films and franchises, Affleck announced he was stepping down as director, and the studio replaced him with Reeves. Affleck would eventually withdraw from the project altogether, following his divorce from Jennifer Garner and a stint in rehab for alcohol abuse.

Diana Prince faces off against Cheetah in new Wonder Woman 1984 trailer

      Jennifer Ouellette · / ArsTechnica · Saturday, 22 August, 2020 - 21:08 · 1 minute

Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) fights crime in the 1980s in Wonder Woman 1984 .

Warner Bros. dropped the latest trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 today during the DC Fandome online event , giving us our first real look at Kristen Wiig's villainous Cheetah. Bonus: we get to see a miraculously revived Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) don parachute pants in an attempt to blend with the times, much to the amusement of Gal Gadot's Diana Prince.

Inspired by the comic book heroine created by William Moulton Marston in the 1940s for DC Comics, Wonder Woman made her big-screen debut in the DCEU with 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , followed by 2017's Justice League . As we reported previously, the first fell short of box office expectations; the second bombed outright. So when Jenkins took on Wonder Woman's origin story, she deliberately departed from the grim humorlessness and dark sensibility of those earlier films, bringing a brighter energy and wit to her tale, along with the usual action. That vision paid off: Wonder Woman went on to gross $821 million worldwide and earned critical raves, making it the most successful of the DCEU films thus far.

Since we're now in the 1980s, Diana is operating in a Cold War scenario, taking on Pedro Pascal's villainous Maxwell Lord , a shrewd and powerful businessman. Wiig plays Barbara Ann Minerva, a British archaeologist who will eventually evolve into her arch-nemesis Cheetah .

Warner Bros. Takes Down Leaked ‘Tenet’ Footage Ahead of Piracy Sensitive Box-Office Release

      Ernesto Van der Sar · / TorrentFreak · Tuesday, 18 August, 2020 - 20:06 · 2 minutes

tenet In recent months many films have skipped the box office due to the coronavirus pandemic, while others have been delayed.

The latter applies to Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated sci-fi thriller ‘ Tenet ‘ that was initially scheduled for release in July.

    Tenet’s Staggered Release Schedule

After several delays, Warner Bros. has now decided on the official and presumably final premiere dates . The film will premiere on August 26 in many countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, South Korea, and the United Kingdom.

Other countries, including the US, Russia and China, will have to wait a week longer and in Japan, Tenet will officially debut on September 18.

These staggered releases aren’t unusual. That said, in an increasingly globalized society, it creates extra tension. With movie fans craving for a blockbuster big-screen experience, it’s frustrating to see others enjoying it first.

    Perfect Storm for Piracy

This tension has motivated people to turn to pirate sites in the past, as these don’t have release delays. This could be a problem for Tenet as well, according to an unnamed anti-piracy veteran who spoke with Variety .

“In some ways ‘Tenet’ is a perfect storm for piracy, in that it has raised expectations, both about the film itself and the cinema experience,” the anti-piracy veteran said. “Also, it has limited availability and suffers from a staggered release.”

Whether piracy will indeed become a massive problem is up for debate. If there is a leak, it will likely be a low-quality camcorded version. While there certainly is a demand for those, hardcore fans will probably prefer to wait a week or two to enjoy it in its full glory.

Warner Bros. will face a much bigger problem when a high-quality leak surfaces. However, those are very rare nowadays.

Warner Bros. Takes Down Leaked Footage

That said, it is clear that the movie studio is keeping a close eye on potential leaks. Over the past few days, Warner Bros. sent several takedown notices to remove exclusive Tenet footage that appeared online.

The footage in question is from a prologue to Tenet, which appeared in theaters during the re-release of Inception in recent weeks. Nolan fans published copies of it online, including on Reddit , but these were swiftly pulled by Warner Bros.

The movie studio also reached out to Google on several occasions, asking it to remove the exclusive footage from Google Drive, where people shared it publicly and privately. These files were subsequently removed by Google for violating its terms of service.

    tenet dmca notice

The takedowns show that Warner Bros. is vigilant and movie theaters may have to employ more strict anti-piracy measures for the premiere as well.

Variety reached out to several exhibitors around the world, but none appear to have received any special instructions thus far. That said, they are likely more than happy to go the extra mile if needed.

“Warner Bros. hasn’t specifically mentioned [piracy], but we’re aware of that and are taking extra steps because Chris Nolan is trusting us with ‘Tenet.’ We’re going to do everything we can to help him out,” one international exhibitor said.

It’s certainly possible that camcorded copies of Tenet will appear online later this month. However, based on similar releases in the past, we expect that the massive piracy boom will take place when the first high-quality copies come out. That could take a few more months.
